How to Support Your Favorite Authors (Without Amazon Owning Your Soul)

Writer: Christine GrayChristine Gray

1. Buy Directly from the Author

Many independent authors sell their books directly on their websites, Etsy, Gumroad, Payhip, or other platforms. Buying directly means they keep more of the profits instead of giving Amazon a hefty cut. So, if your favorite author has a website, check there first. It’s like shopping at a Black-owned bookstore instead of a big chain—power to the people!

And YES, I have a merch store, too for paperbacks, books boxes, AHP DIRECT Audiobooks, and don't miss our MONTHLY $0.99 Ebook Sales! ALL my authors our on a 50%/50% model when one of their products are sold.

Many authors sell more than just books! From tote bags and mugs to notebooks and T-shirts, supporting their merch means you get something fun while helping them keep writing. Plus, nothing says “I’m a literary baddie” like rocking a hoodie with your favorite book quote.

2.The Zon isn't the only player in the game.

Many authors are on other platforms with more of them making a move. Nook, Kobo, OverDrive, Everland, Apple Books, just to name a few. Want a reading membership like KU? Kobo has an unlimited reading program, too. I do believe Everland has one, also. Blessings come in many forms. I'm taking this as a way for authors to learn to diversify and find freedom separate from KU. For so long, we have been stuck in fear of leaving which led us to take getting mistreated laying down. As for readers, it opens you guys up to other means beyond KU and Amazon.

We've taken our books WIDE to many other platforms. Look us up!

3. Leave Reviews Everywhere (And We Mean EVERYWHERE!)

If you can’t buy, you can still boost! Leaving reviews on platforms like BookBub, Goodreads, and even social media helps authors gain visibility. And please, don’t just say, "It was good." Give a little flavor! Something like, "This book had me laughing, crying, and reconsidering my life choices. 10/10 would read again!" Trust me, authors appreciate every word.

4. Follow and Engage on Social Media

You know how your auntie is always liking and commenting on your Facebook posts? Channel that same energy for your favorite authors! Like, share, and comment on their posts to keep their content visible. Social media platforms love engagement, and the more people interact with an author’s posts, the more people see them.

5. Join Their Patreon or Membership Platform

If an author has a Patreon, Ko-fi, or other membership platform, subscribing is like being part of an exclusive book club with VIP access. You often get early content, behind-the-scenes peeks, and direct interaction. Plus, you’re literally helping them pay bills. Win-win!

If you haven't done so, check out OUR Subscriptions and all the amazing perks; LUVIN' IN THE GRAY just $9.95/mo OR AH DIGITAL just $12.95/mo.

6. Request Their Books at Your Local Library

Yes, libraries buy books! If your favorite author’s book isn’t available at your local library, request it. Not only does this support them financially, but it also helps them reach new readers. And hey, your tax dollars are already funding the library—you might as well use them wisely!

7. Join or Create a Book Club Featuring Their Work

Book clubs aren’t just for wine and gossip (though, let’s be honest, those are perks). Start or join a book club featuring your favorite indie authors. Discussion boosts interest, and if everyone in the club buys a copy, that’s a solid chunk of support! ALSO, Sharing is caring! Instead of gifting another pair of socks or a scented candle no one will use, give the gift of a great book. Bonus points if you get a signed copy directly from the author!

8. Talk About Their Books—A LOT!

Word of mouth is powerful. Gush about that book like you do about your latest Netflix obsession. Tell your friends, post about it, tweet it, text your book bestie, or casually mention it to your coworker who’s always looking for a new read. Your enthusiasm sells books better than any ad ever could!

I'm in the thick of it as an author/publisher, whose sells have declined AND a consumer standing on business to send a strong message.

Supporting authors outside of Amazon doesn’t have to be hard or expensive. Even if you can’t buy every book, small actions—like leaving a review, sharing a post, or just hyping them up—can make a massive difference. So, let’s keep our indie authors thriving, our bookshelves stacked, and our wallets Amazon-free.

Now, go forth and support your faves like the literary superhero you are!
